Never Give Up
It all started in early 2009, January to be precise. The misses had been complaining for weeks about a back ache, the doctors were sending her to bone specialists but they couldn't find anything wrong with her. As the weeks passed her breathing was getting a lot worse, taking a few steps or even playing with our kids left her almost lifeless, enough was enough I thought, so the following morning, armed with the mother-in-law, she set off to the hospital, I was left alone with Gabriella, our daughter.
So later on I get a phone call from the mother-in-law saying how she kicked off as the hospital was going on about how depression was causing the pain and breathlessness, eventually they agreed to have an X-Ray on the back, apparently you couldn't see a thing on the left lung, it was pure white which, according to doctors, indicated that it was full of fluid. The doctors had to pump out 7 Litres of fluid out of her lung. The procedure crushes the patients left lung to about the size of a fist, personally I would have cried my eyes out but my wife stood strong and got through it all barely wincing.
Now, after they removed the fluid they done a CT scan and took a sample of the effected area, it was incurable cancer, it broke my heart, in a million years I'd never have expected it. I was crushed, destroyed, every word you can think of which reflects pain on the inside, I felt it. My wife on the other hand was the total opposite, she was adamant about beating it "I won't let this get the better of me!" she cried, it was pure passion, I've never seen someone with such determination. I could not have been more proud of her. Being told she was going to die sooner rather the later would have killed me, not her, she is going to fight this until the last breath.
So we started her on the Chemo in an attempt to try and shrink the cancer so maybe the doctors could control the spread and give her as long as possible. Every time she put the poison in the veins, she smiled, every time she was sick from it she looked at me and said "I'm still here arn't I?". She was also trying these weird "Shakes" which smelt like a 1000 sewers brewing shit, it was rancid to say the least, but it helped, something to do with raising white blood cells and killing cancer ones.
At her very last Chemo session, she fell ill with pneumonia which was hiding behind the cancer making it almost impossible for the doctors to see, her blood pressure fell to 45 which nearly killed her, but as always, she fought it with every ounce of strength. The next day I came to the hospital to see her pushing the old ladies on the ward around and helping to feed them I remember thinking "Fucking hell live, give it a rest!" even the nurses struggled to keep her still. Anyway, they managed to get rid of most the pneumonia but it's still there, coming back in little flares but, touch wood, the worst is done.
The last day that she was in hospital, she had a CT scan to check if the chemo and rancid shakes were actually helping, and what happened was nothing short of a miracle. The cancer had stopped growing and shrunk a little. Now, this might not see much but from the big grin on the doctors face this was amazing news. He did point out that it could come back, it's just a matter of her doing regular tests then for her to go to war again. Her left lung is dead now but the tests are showing some movement so the future is bright.
Gabriella our child
Anyway, we're all a lot happier now, which is a relief for my wife and it looks like she can spend a lot more time with our lovely daughter Gabriella who loves to drive us insane :D
I suppose the moral of the story is, when shit hits the fan, you punch the fan and tell it to stop spreading shit around the room. Live life to the full because you never know when life's going to plunge down on you. There is always another day to fight. Remember that you only live once so make the most of it.
Me and the misses on the right btw we allways dress up like that
